 Executive Director Lisa Blair led a trip to Mackinac Island, Motor City and Niagara Falls during the summer of 2024. Since we’re somehow already at the end of the year (seriously… how did that happen?), I wanted to take a moment for a little housekeeping and shed light on a topic we don’t talk about nearly enough: why we even have a travel program in the first place.

The weather is turning crisper and the days are getting shorter and grayer (mostly from the smoke, I know). With the feeling of fall in the air comes slower mornings, where the world is quiet enough to let me “figuratively” linger over a warm cup of tea. I find myself daydreaming more, and my mind inevitably wanders toward travel. Where will I go, what will I see, what will I taste? And—because I always want the best of both worlds—how can I be bougee on a budget? I dream of warmth, of a place where the sun still lingers when it has already disappeared from here.

 The Pantheon in Rome, Italy with Lisa Blair The Senior Center’s most recent trip to Italy was about as wonderful as it gets. The weather was perfect, and the countryside of Tuscany was everything you see in the movies. We explored vineyards and truffle businesses as well as places that specialized in the creation of olive oil (of course!). We had the opportunity to make homemade pasta, and now every one of the 26 travelers are experts! We got to taste a variety of Italian cuisine and explore historic sites and amazing architecture. Rome was buzzing with the celebration of the 25-Year Jubilee event and the untimely and unfortunate death of the Pope. The crowds were chaotic, but we were all aware that we were participating in a historical event. It was a trip that won’t soon be forgotten. For now, chao Italy!

It’s as if a part of me, the adventurous spirit I once knew so well, is calling me back from the quiet corners of my mind. I was once the free-spirited traveler, a woman who would throw a suitcase together at the drop of a hat and jet off to discover new corners of the world — savoring croissants at a café in Paris, wandering the lively streets of Dublin under the soft glow of streetlamps or chasing the golden hour across the rooftops of Rome
